Albany, NY – A flood watch is in effect today across eastern New York and surrounding areas as heavy rain moves in late Tuesday. Drivers should prepare for hazardous conditions on major roadways, including I-87, where runoff and localized flooding are possible.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), rainfall totals will reach 1 to 3 inches through Wednesday evening, with the heaviest rain occurring overnight. Snowmelt in the Adirondacks and saturated ground will increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas, streams, and rivers. Urban flooding may also occur in poor drainage areas.
A freezing rain advisory remains active for portions of northern New York, Vermont, and Massachusetts until late Tuesday morning. Roads may stay slick as temperatures hover near freezing, particularly in higher elevations. Motorists are urged to use caution during their morning commute.
Looking ahead, the rain transitions to snow showers late Wednesday into Thursday as temperatures drop sharply. Thursday will see highs near 35°F, with lingering icy patches possible in the morning. Friday and Saturday mornings will bring a frigid start, with lows in the teens and highs struggling to reach the 30s. Sunshine returns Friday but won’t offer much warmth.
Residents in flood-prone areas should monitor forecasts and prepare to take action if water levels rise. The NWS advises securing outdoor items and avoiding walking or driving through flooded areas.
