New York City, New York – Dangerous cold conditions are expected overnight across New York City and surrounding areas, prompting a Cold Weather Advisory through Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, wind chills are forecast to drop as low as minus 5 degrees Fahrenheit from midnight tonight through 10 a.m. Wednesday. These conditions pose an increased risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone spending extended time outdoors without proper protection.
The advisory covers New York City, Nassau County on Long Island, and portions of northeast New Jersey and southern Connecticut. The coldest wind chills are expected during the overnight and early-morning hours, particularly before sunrise. Areas along major transportation corridors—including Interstate 95, Interstate 278, Interstate 495, the FDR Drive, and the West Side Highway—will be impacted during early commutes.
The National Weather Service urges residents to limit time outdoors if possible and to dress in layers when heading outside. Exposed skin can be vulnerable to frostbite in a short period under these conditions. Hats, gloves, scarves, and insulated footwear are strongly recommended.
Officials also encourage residents to check on vulnerable populations, including older adults, young children, and those without adequate heating. Pets should be brought indoors, and people experiencing homelessness may need additional assistance during the cold overnight period.
Wind chills across inland portions of the region—including parts of northern New Jersey and the Lower Hudson Valley—may dip even lower than those observed within the city. Coastal areas will be slightly milder but still dangerously cold.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Wednesday morning as winds ease and temperatures recover modestly. However, cold weather will continue to affect the region through midweek.
Residents are advised to monitor official forecasts and heed cold weather safety guidance as the advisory remains in effect.
