Albany, NY – Residents across New York’s Mohawk Valley and western Adirondacks should prepare for challenging conditions as lake effect snow intensifies early this week. A cold front will bring snow squalls and heavy snowfall through Wednesday, creating hazardous travel across major roadways.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Lake Effect Snow Warning is in effect for northern Herkimer County, with snowfall totals of 6 to 10 inches expected. Meanwhile, a Winter Weather Advisory covers western Hamilton County, where 3 to 6 inches of snow could fall by early Wednesday. Winds may gust up to 25 mph, reducing visibility for drivers.
Snow squalls could cause sudden whiteout conditions along roads such as Route 28 and the New York State Thruway. Travelers are urged to delay non-essential trips or use extreme caution, especially during peak squall activity Monday night into Tuesday morning.
The forecast for the week shows colder temperatures lingering across the region. Tuesday will be mostly sunny with highs near 27 degrees, but nighttime lows could drop to 12 degrees. Wednesday will remain dry and sunny, but the wind chill will make outdoor activities brisk. By Thursday, another cold front may bring increased cloud cover and the potential for snow showers by the weekend.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from local weather offices and prepare vehicles with winter supplies, including blankets, flashlights, and food. For more details, visit weather.gov or follow the NWS Albany office on social media.
