Binghamton, NY – Snow squalls and lake-effect snow are set to bring challenging travel conditions across Central New York starting Tuesday. A cold front pushing through the region will generate scattered snow showers and isolated squalls, reducing visibility and creating slippery road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, snow squalls could quickly produce up to half an inch of snow in minutes, making roads treacherous for drivers. Lake-effect snow bands are forecast to develop over northern Oneida County late Monday into Tuesday and gradually shift south into Cayuga, Onondaga, and Cortland counties by Tuesday night. Travel along key routes like I-81 and NY-12 could be significantly impacted.
Tuesday’s temperatures will remain frigid, with highs near 21°F and gusty winds up to 23 mph, further reducing visibility. Overnight lows are expected to drop to 13°F. Snow showers may persist into Wednesday morning before tapering off.
Looking ahead, the extended forecast predicts mostly cloudy conditions on Thursday with a slight chance of snow showers in the afternoon. Highs will remain in the upper 20s. By Friday, conditions will improve slightly, with a mix of sun and clouds and highs near 34°F.
Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and use extreme caution while traveling. Snow squalls can develop with little warning, so drivers should prepare for sudden whiteout conditions. For detailed updates, visit weather.gov/bgm.
