Louisiana wakes up to a rare, biting chill this morning as stiff north winds whip across the New Orleans metro, rattling shutters and bending palms along the lakefront. The cold feels sharper than the thermometer suggests, and the wind carries it straight through coats.

According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through Sunday morning for southeast Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Wind chills have dropped as low as 13 degrees, while a Wind Advisory continues with sustained winds near 30 mph and gusts up to 40 mph.

Temperatures across New Orleans, Metairie, Gretna, and Chalmette hover in the lower to mid-30s early, but the wind makes it feel much colder. High-profile vehicles may struggle on the Crescent City Connection, I-10 near the lake, and elevated ramps across Jefferson and St. Bernard parishes. Loose objects can blow around, and brief power outages remain possible.

The cold poses an unusual risk for the region. Prolonged freezing temperatures increase the chance of burst pipes, especially in older homes. Residents should wrap exposed plumbing, allow faucets to drip slowly, and bring pets indoors. Frostbite and hypothermia can develop quickly with exposed skin in these conditions.

Sunshine returns later today, but the wind keeps conditions harsh. Highs only reach the upper 30s. Winds gradually ease tonight, allowing temperatures to fall into the mid-20s away from the coast, setting up another round of frost before daybreak Sunday.

A noticeable warmup begins Sunday afternoon as highs climb into the mid-40s. That rebound accelerates early next week. By Monday, temperatures rise near 60 degrees, and by Tuesday, highs approach the upper 60s with increasing clouds. Rain chances return late Tuesday into Tuesday night.

For now, delay nonessential travel if possible, secure outdoor items, and protect pipes and pets. How are you handling this rare deep freeze along the Gulf Coast?
