ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A widespread Winter Storm Warning is now in effect across much of New Mexico, with forecasters warning of heavy snow, ice accumulation and dangerously cold temperatures through the weekend.

The National Weather Service said the storm will begin intensifying late Friday morning and continue through Sunday morning, affecting large portions of central, eastern and northeastern New Mexico. Snowfall totals are expected to range from 2 to 10 inches across lower elevations, with 10 to 16 inches possible above 9,000 feet, including the Sacramento Mountains and Sangre de Cristo ranges.

Forecasters warned that mixed precipitation, including sleet and freezing rain, could develop Friday night, especially across Curry and Roosevelt counties, where ice accumulations of around one-tenth of an inch are possible. Ice combined with snow is expected to significantly reduce tire traction and create dangerous travel conditions, particularly during the Friday evening commute.

Travel could become very difficult to impossible, especially along Interstate 40 from Tijeras Canyon east to the Texas border, officials said. The weight of heavy snow may also stress power lines, increasing the risk of localized power outages.

In addition to snow and ice, bitterly cold air will settle in behind the storm. Temperatures are expected to plunge into the single digits across eastern New Mexico, with wind chills dropping below zero Sunday and Monday mornings. The cold raises concerns for frostbite and hypothermia with prolonged exposure.

Residents are urged to limit travel, prepare emergency supplies, and monitor road conditions through nmroads.com or 511. Authorities advise keeping extra food, water and a flashlight in vehicles in case motorists become stranded as the storm intensifies.
