Santa Fe, N.M. – Dangerous winds reaching up to 55 mph are sweeping across New Mexico this Sunday, raising wildfire risks and visibility concerns from Gallup to Roswell, with the worst expected through Monday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Red Flag Warning is in effect for central and southern New Mexico until 9 p.m. Sunday, particularly in areas south of Highway 60. Wind gusts between 30–55 mph and relative humidity as low as 7% are combining with dry fuels, creating conditions where any spark could rapidly ignite and spread.

Localized blowing dust is already causing visibility reductions near Ruidoso, Las Vegas, and Clines Corners. In eastern and northeastern areas such as Roy and Tucumcari, gusts over 50 mph are expected through Monday. Patchy smoke from fires in southern Arizona and New Mexico may further reduce air quality and visibility statewide.

Drivers on I-40 and Highway 60 should use extreme caution, especially those in high-profile vehicles susceptible to crosswinds. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, properly discard cigarettes, and keep vehicles off dry grass.

Wind Advisories and Red Flag Warnings remain in effect through Sunday night, with more gusty conditions forecast Monday. Stay alert for new fire starts and possible expansion of advisories.
