Albuquerque, N.M. – Strong southwest winds up to 60 mph could tear through central and southern New Mexico on Sunday, threatening power lines, toppling trees, and reducing visibility to near zero in blowing dust.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque and El Paso, a High Wind Watch is in effect from late Sunday morning through Sunday evening for a broad swath of the state, including Glorieta Pass, the Sacramento Mountains, and cities like Las Cruces, Alamogordo, and Truth or Consequences. Wind gusts are expected to reach between 50 and 60 mph, with sustained winds over 30 mph in many areas.
The strongest impacts will likely occur along the Rio Grande Valley, the Tularosa Basin, and mountain passes including Raton and Glorieta. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should avoid travel during peak gust periods, and residents are urged to secure outdoor furniture, signage, and other loose objects.
Blowing dust could reduce visibility to under three miles, especially in desert lowlands near Deming, Hatch, and White Sands National Park. Power outages are possible as trees and utility lines may be knocked down.
Warnings are expected to be upgraded ahead of the event. Stay alert for official updates and consider completing storm preparations by Saturday night.
