ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – With Thanksgiving travel fast approaching, New Mexico officials are urging drivers to prepare vehicles now for winter driving and long-distance holiday trips. From Albuquerque to Santa Fe, transportation leaders say taking a few precautions before colder air and mountain snow arrive later this month can help prevent breakdowns and delays.

According to the New Mexico Department of Transportation, early November is the ideal time to inspect tires, top off antifreeze, test batteries, and replace wiper blades. Drivers are also encouraged to keep a winter emergency kit in their vehicles — with a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, bottled water, snacks, and traction materials such as sand or kitty litter.

Motorists planning Thanksgiving travel on I-25, I-40, and U.S. 550 should prepare for strong winds, quick weather shifts, and reduced visibility in higher elevations. “Our terrain and temperatures can change drastically in just a few miles,” an NMDOT spokesperson said. “Preparation before travel makes a big difference when winter weather hits.” Officials recommend keeping gas tanks at least half full, dressing in layers, and checking NMRoads.com for live traffic and weather alerts.

With one of the busiest travel weeks of the year ahead, state officials stress that early vehicle checks and smart planning help ensure safer Thanksgiving travel across New Mexico’s highways, mountains, and desert corridors.
