BOISE, Idaho – With Thanksgiving travel approaching, Idaho officials are reminding drivers to prepare vehicles now for snow, ice, and steep mountain passes. From Boise to Coeur d’Alene, transportation leaders are stressing that early preparation and maintenance can make all the difference once winter driving conditions return later this month.

According to the Idaho Transportation Department, early November is the right time to inspect tires, test batteries, top off antifreeze, and replace wiper blades. Drivers should also carry a winter emergency kit — including blankets, a flashlight, jumper cables, bottled water, snacks, and traction aids such as sand or kitty litter.

Motorists traveling I-84, I-90, and U.S. 95 during Thanksgiving week should plan for changing elevations and potential snowfall, especially through the mountains. “Idaho’s weather can change quickly between valleys and passes,” an ITD spokesperson said. “Preparing vehicles before the holidays helps everyone travel safely once winter arrives.” Officials recommend keeping at least half a tank of gas, packing extra clothing, and checking 511.idaho.gov for real-time traffic and road conditions.

With Thanksgiving marking the start of Idaho’s busiest cold-weather travel period, officials emphasize that readiness now will help drivers stay safe across the state’s highways and mountain corridors as winter driving season begins.
