Albuquerque, New Mexico – A pair of winter systems will bring snow, strong winds, and the coldest air of the season to New Mexico through Friday, raising concerns for hazardous travel and dangerously low temperatures, especially overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, rain and snow showers will develop Wednesday and continue intermittently through Friday, with colder and snowier conditions becoming more likely Thursday night. Northern and western New Mexico are expected to see the most persistent snow, while central areas, including Albuquerque, could see light accumulations as temperatures drop.

Snowfall amounts remain uncertain, but the most likely scenario calls for 1 to 3 inches across parts of northern and central New Mexico, with higher totals possible if colder air arrives sooner. Gusty winds on Thursday and Friday may lead to blowing snow and reduced visibility, particularly across northeast New Mexico and along east-central highways.

Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph could create hazardous crosswinds on north-south roadways Thursday, while Friday morning brings increasing concern for low visibility in open areas due to blowing snow. By Friday night, a surge of Arctic air will drive temperatures sharply lower, with single-digit lows expected across much of northern New Mexico and teens common farther south. Some valleys may dip near or below zero.

Residents are urged to protect pipes, plants, and pets, secure loose outdoor items, and prepare for difficult travel. The National Weather Service says additional advisories may be issued as confidence increases in snowfall coverage and wind impacts through the end of the week.
