Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico residents can expect strong wind gusts and dangerously cold temperatures starting today and continuing into Wednesday morning. Wind speeds could reach 55 mph in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, creating hazardous conditions along I-25 and surrounding areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, strong winds will peak Tuesday afternoon, primarily affecting areas with exposed terrain and high elevations. Temperatures are forecast to plummet Tuesday night, reaching lows near 21 degrees in Albuquerque and dipping into single digits in higher elevations. Residents are urged to secure loose objects and dress in layers to prevent hypothermia.

By Wednesday morning, wind chills across northern and western New Mexico, including the Four Corners region and Navajo Nation, will be extreme. Drivers should exercise caution on highways such as I-40 and US-550, where gusts could cause erratic handling and reduced visibility.

Looking ahead, Albuquerque will see sunny skies Wednesday with highs near 53 degrees, but overnight lows will stay below freezing at 27 degrees. Warmer weather will return by Friday, with highs reaching 64 degrees before dropping again in the evenings.

Officials recommend checking forecasts frequently and avoiding unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak cold periods. Additionally, residents in rural areas should prepare for potential power outages due to wind.
