Albuquerque, N.M. – Strong thunderstorms are expected to hammer eastern New Mexico through Monday, bringing large hail, cloud-to-ground lightning, and the potential for flash flooding, especially near Clovis, Tucumcari, and Raton.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, an active weather pattern will continue across the state, with the greatest storm risks shifting from central and western New Mexico on Friday and Saturday to central and eastern areas on Sunday and Monday. Storms could become severe Sunday afternoon, with the threat of locally heavy rainfall increasing through the start of the week. Meanwhile, critical fire weather conditions will develop across southwestern and southern New Mexico due to dry air and gusty winds.

Cities including Santa Fe, Las Vegas, and Roswell may see lightning, brief downpours, and wind gusts strong enough to blow around unsecured objects. Rainfall totals could reach 2 inches in parts of eastern New Mexico, where flash flooding is possible in dry arroyo channels. Gusty, erratic winds will also pose travel hazards, especially for high-profile vehicles along I-40 and U.S. 285.

Residents should stay indoors during storms, charge mobile devices in advance, and avoid driving through flooded roadways. The threat of severe weather will persist into Monday evening, and additional watches or warnings may be issued.
