Los Lunas, NM – A 51-year-old man was fatally shot by a Valencia County Sheriff’s Office deputy during a disturbance on September 29, 2024. The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is investigating the officer-involved shooting (OIS) at the request of the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the New Mexico State Police, deputies arrived at the 100 block of La Ladera around 10:30 p.m. after hearing reports of gunfire. Earlier, neighbors had reported a disturbance. Deputies witnessed a person firing a weapon in the direction of a neighboring home. At least one deputy discharged their firearm, fatally striking Michael Gabaldon, 51. He later died from his injuries. No officers were injured in the incident.
The names of the deputies involved have not been released. Valencia County authorities will provide details on their duty status and any potential administrative actions. The New Mexico State Police will collect evidence and submit findings to the district attorney for further review.
