Clovis, N.M. – Thunderstorms packing hail, lightning, and damaging winds are expected to hit far eastern New Mexico Tuesday afternoon, kicking off several days of severe weather for areas near the Texas border.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a slight risk for severe storms is in place from 2 to 10 p.m. today, with the greatest threat focused on communities like Clovis and Portales. Storms are likely to redevelop on Wednesday, especially around Clayton, between 2 and 9 p.m.
Residents in Curry and Roosevelt counties should prepare for rapid changes in weather, especially during afternoon commutes. Hazards include quarter-sized hail, strong downbursts, and frequent lightning. Officials urge residents to monitor alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings. “If you hear thunder, go indoors immediately,” NWS advised.
Temperatures are running 5–10 degrees above average, fueling the instability. Clovis is expected to reach 81°F today, while Clayton may top out at 72°F. These conditions increase the potential for isolated but intense thunderstorms across the far eastern plains.
Storm chances will persist through midweek, with additional watches or warnings likely. Residents should stay weather-aware and avoid outdoor activity during peak storm hours.
