Santa Fe, New Mexico – A Flood Watch has been issued for parts of northern New Mexico, including the Hermits Peak Calf Canyon burn scar area, as heavy rainfall and snowmelt could cause flash flooding Thursday afternoon through Thursday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, rainfall rates of up to an inch per hour are expected, which, combined with the rapid melting of late-season snowpack, could significantly increase river and stream flows. This weather pattern is most likely to affect the Southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains and East Slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Residents and travelers in flood-prone areas, especially along creeks and streams, should be prepared for potential flooding. Creeks could rise quickly and overflow their banks, causing hazardous conditions on roads and in low-lying areas.
Those in the affected areas are urged to monitor updates and be ready to take action if Flash Flood Warnings are issued. Flooding could also impact local infrastructure and travel routes. For safety, avoid driving in areas with rapid water flow and be prepared for sudden changes in conditions. The flood watch is expected to last through Thursday evening.
