Albuquerque, N.M. – Burn scar areas across central and eastern New Mexico, including Ruidoso and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, face a growing flash flood threat through Sunday night as rounds of heavy rain continue to soak the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Flood Watch remains in effect for the South Central Mountains until 9 p.m. Saturday, with a second watch spanning a wider area—including Curry, Quay, and Lincoln counties—from Sunday afternoon through 6 a.m. Monday. Rainfall totals could reach 1 to 2 inches broadly, with isolated pockets seeing up to 4 inches by late Sunday.

Communities downstream of burn scars, such as those near the McBride and Hermits Peak-Calf Canyon fire zones, are especially vulnerable. Ruidoso, a popular mountain town, remains at moderate risk for flash flooding where even moderate rain can trigger debris flows or sudden stream surges. Low-water crossings, creeks, and flood-prone roadways are of particular concern.

Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, especially near canyons or drainage areas. Keep phones charged and be prepared to move to higher ground if alerts are issued.

Flood Watches may be upgraded to warnings with little notice. Additional updates are expected as the storm system evolves through late Sunday.
