Birmingham, Alabama – A slow-moving storm system could dump more than 5 inches of rain across parts of Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Tennessee through Saturday, raising the risk of flash flooding and travel disruptions.

According to the NOAA Weather Prediction Center, a series of wet, slow-moving systems will push across the southern U.S. through May 11. The heaviest rainfall is expected from central Mississippi through northern Alabama and Georgia, where saturated soils and runoff may lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas.

In Alabama, cities like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Huntsville are in line for 3 to 5 inches of rain by Friday evening. The Tennessee Valley and I-65 corridor may see ponding on roads, while creeks and rivers could rise rapidly with repeated rounds of rain.

Emergency managers urge residents to avoid driving through flooded roads and keep devices charged in case of power outages. School districts in flood-prone counties may consider early dismissals or virtual learning days if conditions worsen midweek.

Rain chances will persist through the weekend with no significant dry stretch expected. Additional alerts or flood advisories may be issued by the National Weather Service as the system stalls over the Southeast.
