Albuquerque, NM – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for much of central and eastern New Mexico from noon until 7 PM MDT Friday, as strong winds and low humidity heighten fire danger across the region.
According to the National Weather Service, southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, are expected on Friday, along with relative humidity levels dropping to between 9% and 14%. These conditions could create an environment where any fire that develops may spread rapidly.
The Red Flag Warning includes the Middle Rio Grande Valley, Northeast Highlands, Sandia and Manzano Mountains, Central Highlands, and East Central Plains. The areas impacted could see critical fire weather conditions from noon Friday through the evening.
Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged during this period. Authorities are urging officials and fire crews to remain vigilant as any ignitions are likely to escalate quickly.
For those in affected areas, preparedness actions such as avoiding open flames, securing fire-prone areas, and staying updated on weather warnings are essential to preventing fire outbreaks.
