El Paso, TX – A Fire Weather Watch has been issued for Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday evening as critical fire conditions are expected across southwest and south-central New Mexico, including the Lincoln and Capitan National Forests.
According to the National Weather Service in El Paso, strong winds of 20 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 45 mph, will combine with extremely low humidity levels, dropping as low as 5 percent. These conditions will create a heightened fire risk across fire weather zones 111, 112, and 113, covering lowlands and forested areas.
Fuel conditions remain dangerously dry, with ERC percentiles—an indicator of vegetation dryness—ranging between 75 and 90. Although some precipitation was recorded Saturday, it was insufficient to alleviate fire risks. The experimental RFTI (Risk for Fire Transmission Index) is forecasted to be between 5 and 7, signaling significant fire potential.
Officials warn that any fires that ignite could spread rapidly due to the dry and windy environment. Residents and visitors in affected areas are urged to avoid outdoor burning and remain vigilant for further weather updates.
The National Weather Service advises monitoring forecasts for potential Red Flag Warnings as conditions develop. Fire departments and emergency personnel are on high alert to respond to any wildfire outbreaks.
