Albuquerque, NM – A significant winter storm is set to impact northern New Mexico and southern Colorado from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning, bringing heavy snowfall and hazardous travel conditions.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Albuquerque, snowfall totals between 4 and 8 inches are expected at elevations between 7,500 and 9,500 feet in the Northern Mountains, including the Sangre de Cristo range. Higher elevations above 9,500 feet could see 8 to 16 inches, with some peaks surpassing 20 inches. Raton Pass and the Northeast Highlands are also expected to receive substantial snow accumulations.

The NWS in Pueblo has issued a similar winter storm watch for southern Colorado, particularly in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and areas around Walsenburg and Trinidad. Snowfall accumulations in these regions could reach between 6 and 12 inches, with wind gusts up to 35 mph further reducing visibility and making travel hazardous.

Officials warn that road closures and significant travel delays are possible, particularly along mountain passes such as Raton Pass. Those traveling Friday evening should prepare for deteriorating conditions and monitor updates from local authorities.

Residents are urged to take necessary precautions, including stocking up on essentials and avoiding unnecessary travel during the storm. The latest forecasts and advisories are available on the National Weather Service website.
