Albuquerque, NM – Dry, windy conditions will create a heightened fire risk across central and eastern New Mexico on Thursday, with gusts reaching 60 mph in some areas. The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch from Thursday afternoon through the evening, particularly for areas east of I-25, including the Middle Rio Grande Valley and Sandia and Manzano Mountains.

According to the National Weather Service, strong southwest winds between 40 and 60 mph will develop as a storm system moves across the Great Basin. Humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 10%, significantly increasing the potential for rapidly spreading wildfires. Officials advise against outdoor burning and urge residents to secure loose outdoor objects.

Thursday’s high temperature will reach 67°F in Albuquerque, with patchy blowing dust and dangerous fire conditions throughout the afternoon. By Friday, winds will ease slightly, but a chance of showers will develop late in the day, bringing much-needed moisture.

The weekend will see a shift in conditions, with a mix of rain and snow expected Friday night into Saturday. Daytime highs will drop to the mid-40s, with snow accumulations possible at higher elevations. Sunday will bring clearing skies and temperatures rebounding into the upper 50s.

Residents should stay updated on changing conditions and take precautions against fire hazards.
