Trenton, New Jersey – Drivers across parts of New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania could encounter slick conditions early Thursday as a sharp drop in temperatures allows rain to briefly transition to light snow before daybreak. While snowfall amounts are expected to remain low, the timing may affect the morning commute in some areas.
According to the National Weather Service office in Mount Holly, light rain will change to very light snow late tonight, mainly in areas near and north of I-78. Precipitation is expected to taper off by mid-morning, but colder air arriving from west to east could allow a dusting of snow to develop before the system exits.
Snow probabilities are highest across the northern interior. The chance of at least a tenth of an inch of snow reaches 60 to 70 percent in parts of Sussex County and the Poconos, with lower but still notable chances across central New Jersey, including areas near Trenton and Flemington. Farther south and east toward the Jersey Shore, precipitation is more likely to end as rain, with only a small chance for snow before ending.
Forecast snowfall totals remain light, generally under an inch, with most areas seeing little to no accumulation. However, temperatures are expected to continue falling after 7 a.m., increasing the risk of slick spots on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.
Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time during the early morning hours and remain alert for localized icy patches, especially in elevated or shaded areas. Conditions should gradually improve later Thursday as precipitation ends, though colder air will linger through the day. Additional updates may be issued overnight if conditions change.
