Trenton, N.J. – Damaging winds and hail are possible across parts of northern and central New Jersey this afternoon as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday for six counties, including Morris, Sussex, and Mercer.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, the watch covers Hunterdon, Mercer, Morris, Somerset, Sussex, and Warren counties. Forecasters warn that storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph, frequent lightning, and isolated hail through the evening hours. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items and remain weather-aware.

Heaviest impacts are expected along the I-78 and I-80 corridors, where fast-moving storm cells could lead to downed trees, power outages, and hazardous driving conditions during the evening commute. In areas like Flemington, Morristown, and Newton, the storms may intensify quickly, limiting warning time. Outdoor activities and events may need to be rescheduled as storms roll through late afternoon into early evening.

Residents should charge phones, monitor NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts, and avoid travel during heavy downpours if possible. Isolated flooding in low-lying areas is also possible with torrential rain.

The thunderstorm watch expires at 8 p.m., but additional warnings could be issued as the system progresses eastward. Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service.
