Binghamton, N.Y. – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across parts of southern and central New York through 8 p.m. Tuesday, bringing the threat of damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and brief downpours to cities like Binghamton, Ithaca, and Elmira.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for 10 counties, including Broome, Tompkins, Chemung, and Sullivan. The watch went into effect at 1:05 p.m. and extends through Tuesday evening. Storms may develop quickly, with isolated hail and wind gusts topping 60 mph possible.

Communities in the Southern Tier and Catskills should monitor conditions closely, especially along I-81, Route 17, and rural areas with limited cell coverage. Power outages and fallen tree limbs are possible with stronger cells. Residents are urged to stay indoors during thunder and avoid travel if visibility drops during heavy rain bursts.

This is the first severe weather watch of the month for the region, signaling the start of New York’s active spring storm season.

Warnings may be issued as storms intensify. Updates will follow as conditions develop. Stay alert and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts this evening.
