New Hanover County, NC – A deadly hit-and-run on Interstate 40 East is under investigation after a pedestrian was struck and killed Monday night in New Hanover County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

At approximately 9:16 p.m. on Oct. 15, troopers responded to reports of a fatal crash near mile marker 415 on I-40 East. Investigators say two vehicles were initially involved in a separate collision and had pulled over to the shoulder of the interstate.

According to the Highway Patrol, the operator of one of those vehicles exited their car and was standing in the roadway when they were struck by a third, unidentified vehicle traveling eastbound on I-40. The driver of that vehicle did not stop and continued traveling after the impact.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the victim has not yet been released pending notification of family.

Authorities are now seeking the public’s help identifying the vehicle and driver involved. Anyone with information is urged to contact investigators at 910-395-3917.
