Concord, NH – New Hampshire State Police are urging drivers to stay vigilant around school buses as students return to school. Although buses remain one of the safest ways to transport children, accidents still occur, especially when drivers ignore bus safety rules.

Police advise that the safest rule is to always stop if a bus is halted with flashing lights or an extended stop-arm. Yellow flashing lights indicate the bus is about to stop, while red lights mean children are getting on or off. State law prohibits drivers from passing on the right side of a bus, where children board and exit.

Drivers should slow down near bus stops, where children often play or cross streets. Police stress that even momentary distractions can be deadly. Drivers are also encouraged to watch for young pedestrians who may be inattentive to traffic.
