Boston, Massachusetts – A refreshing pattern change is on the way for New England, bringing below-normal temperatures as July closes and August begins, with the coolest air settling in by Friday.

According to the National Weather Service, a surge of Canadian air will push southward between July 30 and August 5, 2025, keeping high temperatures several degrees below seasonal averages across Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. Early guidance highlights Boston, Portland, and Burlington as likely to see afternoon highs in the upper 60s to low 70s—nearly 10 degrees cooler than typical August days.

For residents and travelers, the cool-down may offer much-needed relief after recent heat waves but could also bring chilly nights, especially in the interior and higher elevations. Light jackets or extra layers may be needed for morning commutes, hikes, or coastal outings. Those with outdoor plans should also be aware of the increased risk of patchy fog and damp mornings along the I-95 corridor and near the Green and White Mountains.

This pattern marks the first significant August cool spell since 2021 and could persist through the first full week of the month. Stay tuned to local weather updates for any advisories or rapid changes, especially as summer events and travel continue.
