Portland, ME – New England residents may see a snowy Christmas, with mixed forecasts for the holiday week.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are predicted to be near normal from December 20–26, while precipitation is expected to trend above normal across the region. This combination raises the potential for snow in states like Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire. However, warmer conditions along coastal areas, including Boston, could result in rain rather than snow.
Interior and higher-elevation areas stand the best chance of accumulating snow, particularly in northern Maine and the Green Mountains of Vermont. Historically, these areas experience a white Christmas more often than not, with snow on the ground 60–90% of the time.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts in the days leading up to Christmas for more precise conditions. With weather patterns shifting rapidly this time of year, snowy surprises are still possible.
