Boston, Mass. – Mariners along Georges Bank face dangerous conditions through Monday as the National Weather Service issues a Gale Warning, warning of winds topping 35 knots and seas climbing to 11 feet. The roughest weather is expected Monday as shifting winds and building seas create treacherous conditions for fishing and commercial traffic.
According to the National Weather Service, south to southeast winds of 20 to 30 knots will strengthen overnight before turning easterly at 25 to 35 knots Monday. By the afternoon, winds shift west to northwest as a low-pressure system tracks across the waters. Seas will peak at 6 to 11 feet, and visibility could fall below 1 nautical mile in showers and fog.
Smaller vessels are urged to remain in port, while larger craft should use caution navigating Georges Bank, where waves could make maneuvering difficult. Offshore operators should secure gear, ensure all safety equipment is accessible, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak gale hours.
Conditions begin to ease Monday night, with seas subsiding to 4 to 6 feet and winds dropping to 5 to 15 knots. Fog remains a hazard into Tuesday morning, limiting visibility before calmer seas return midweek.
Warnings remain in effect until late Monday night, with additional advisories possible as a second front approaches Thursday.
