Reno, NV – A powerful winter storm is set to bring high winds, rain, and heavy snow to western Nevada starting Friday. Residents near Reno and Carson City are urged to prepare for hazardous conditions, including sudden crosswinds and chain controls on key routes like I-80 and US 50.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno, a Wind Advisory will be in effect Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Southwest winds of 15-25 mph are expected, with gusts reaching 55 mph in some areas. In wind-prone zones, gusts could exceed 60 mph, creating risks for high-profile vehicles and outdoor objects. NWS advises securing loose items and driving cautiously.
Sierra passes could see significant snowfall, making travel dangerous throughout the weekend. Chain controls will likely be required as early as Friday night. The hardest-hit areas are expected to be higher elevations along I-80 and the Tahoe region. Drivers should plan for delays, carry winter supplies, and monitor weather updates.
The forecast for the Reno-Carson City area calls for rain beginning Friday morning, transitioning to snow in higher elevations by the evening. Snowfall could continue into Saturday. Weekend travelers should prepare for icy roads, sudden closures, and difficult driving conditions.
Looking ahead, the region will see calmer weather starting Sunday, with partly cloudy skies and daytime highs in the low 40s. The next five days include another chance of precipitation Tuesday.
