LAS VEGAS – Work is underway on the Sunset Road Preservation Project to improve safety and extend the road’s lifespan.
The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has officially launched the $12.9 million project to maintain and preserve Sunset Road (State Route 562). Expected to be completed by spring 2026, the work includes milling and repaving the roadway, lowering utilities, replacing median islands, and upgrading electrical systems.
The federally funded project aims to provide a smooth driving surface, extend the road’s lifespan with modern resurfacing techniques, and enhance road safety. The improvements come at a critical time, as Las Vegas is known for having some of the most hazardous roads due to heavy traffic volumes and significant pedestrian activity.
With more than 2 million registered vehicles in the Las Vegas metropolitan area, NDOT acknowledges the potential impact of the project on congestion. To minimize disruptions to businesses and commuters, nightly lane closures will take place from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Friday, between Las Vegas Blvd and Annie Oakley Dr through Oct. 10.
During the daytime hours, multiple lanes will remain open, especially near the airport, to accommodate heavy traffic. Speed limits will be reduced to 35 mph through the work zones. NDOT also plans to work with Waze to inform the public about planned highway restrictions.
