Omaha, NE – Residents across eastern Nebraska should prepare for slippery roads as freezing rain threatens the US-30 corridor starting Friday afternoon. Forecasters warn that ice accumulations could make travel hazardous into Saturday morning.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Omaha, freezing drizzle is expected to begin Friday afternoon, transitioning into freezing rain by the evening. Areas along and north of the I-80 corridor, including Lincoln, Omaha, and Norfolk, may see up to 0.2 inches of ice. Motorists are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, as the Friday evening commute could face delays and icy roadways.

The NWS forecasts that the icy mix may shift to rain late Saturday, bringing some relief. However, travelers on US-30 and surrounding roads should remain vigilant. Even small amounts of ice can make driving conditions treacherous.

Looking ahead, temperatures are expected to climb slightly over the weekend, with highs near 34°F on Friday and 44°F by Sunday. Despite the warming trend, freezing nighttime temperatures could refreeze wet roads, prolonging slick conditions.

Residents are advised to stock up on essential supplies and check local road conditions before traveling. Ensure vehicles are equipped with winter gear, and allow extra time for commutes. Power outages, while not highly likely, remain a risk in areas of heavier ice buildup.

The forecast also predicts mostly cloudy skies and milder weather starting Sunday afternoon. Stay updated with the latest advisories from the NWS to ensure safety throughout the weekend.
