Omaha, NE – Residents across Nebraska are bracing for strong winds today, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph during the afternoon. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a wind advisory effective from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., urging travelers and residents to exercise caution.
According to the NWS Omaha/Valley office, west to northwest winds will increase this morning, becoming strongest by midday. The advisory impacts portions of southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa, including major highways like I-80 and I-29. Gusty conditions may lead to hazardous travel for high-profile vehicles and could down tree limbs and power lines. Elevated fire risks are also a concern, especially in dry areas.
Travelers should secure any loose outdoor objects and holiday decorations to prevent wind damage. Motorists, particularly those driving large vehicles, are advised to delay trips if possible or reduce speeds to ensure safety.
Tonight, winds will diminish but remain blustery, with lows dipping to 14°F under clear skies. Friday will bring calmer conditions, with northwest winds at 8-13 mph and a high near 27°F.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Nebraska residents can expect sunny skies on Saturday and Sunday. Temperatures will climb slightly, reaching a high of 44°F on Sunday with light south winds. Christmas Day is forecasted to bring partly sunny skies with highs near 46°F, offering a mild holiday break after today’s windy conditions.
Stay updated with NWS advisories and take precautions as needed throughout the day.
