Omaha, NE – Nebraska residents should prepare for a series of severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall from tonight through Thursday morning. The National Weather Service (NWS) Omaha/Valley has issued warnings for thunderstorms and potential flash flooding, especially in southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa. There is a 50-80% chance of thunderstorms late Tuesday night into Wednesday, with a slight risk of strong to severe storms (5-15%) in the area.

According to the NWS, another round of severe storms is expected on Wednesday afternoon and evening, bringing a 15-30% chance of severe weather, including localized flooding, hail, and damaging winds. The threat level for these storms has been rated at a 2 on the NWS’s scale, indicating a moderate risk. Residents are advised to stay weather-aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings.

Heavy rainfall is forecasted across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa through 7 a.m. Wednesday morning, with the greatest rainfall amounts expected between 5 p.m. Wednesday and into Thursday. Rainfall totals could reach 1 to 2 inches, with localized areas potentially receiving over 3 inches. This could lead to flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and near creeks and streams.

The NWS emphasizes the threat of damaging winds, with gusts potentially reaching 60 to 70 mph. Residents are urged to avoid driving through flooded areas and to take precautions if living in flood-prone zones. The severe weather threat is expected to subside by Thursday morning, with drier conditions returning later in the day.
