Hastings, Nebraska – Strong thunderstorms are poised to return to south central Nebraska late this week, bringing hail, wind, and travel delays.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, storms may develop as early as Thursday night, with a stronger round expected Friday evening. Areas northwest of a line from Phillipsburg, Kansas to York, Nebraska — including Kearney and Hastings — are at risk for hail up to quarter-size and wind gusts reaching 60 MPH. No severe weather is anticipated tonight, but these late-week storms could disrupt evening plans and road travel.

Drivers should avoid flooded rural roadways and secure loose outdoor items. Those near Highways 92 and 281 should remain alert for fast-moving storms, especially Friday night into early Saturday.

Rain chances remain through Tuesday, with the best opportunity for storms during evening and overnight hours. These conditions stem from lingering atmospheric instability, with each passing day carrying a marginal chance of a stronger system. While this is not an organized severe outbreak, isolated strong cells may pack a punch.

Those in impacted counties like Adams, Clay, Hall, and Buffalo should monitor local advisories and consider delaying outdoor activities during evening hours.

Storm risk remains elevated through early next week. NWS may issue updated advisories if Friday’s system intensifies.
