Hastings, Nebraska – Strong storms capable of producing large hail and damaging winds could develop across Nebraska late Sunday afternoon and continue into the overnight hours.
According to the US National Weather Service in Hastings, a slight risk (Level 2 out of 5) for severe weather exists Sunday, with the highest chances west of Highway 281. Scattered showers and thunderstorms may pop up throughout the day, but the main threat window for stronger storms runs from late afternoon through midnight. Winds could gust between 25–35 mph as highs climb into the 70s.
Cities including Hastings, Kearney, and Grand Island could see strong to severe storms, especially if evening temperatures hold steady. Drivers should stay alert for sudden downpours, wind damage, and possible hail on major routes like I-80 and Highway 6. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and have a weather radio ready in case warnings are issued.
While Monday brings a warmup into the low 80s, scattered showers remain possible east of Highway 281. Weather officials warn that additional advisories may follow if storms develop Sunday night.
