Hastings, NE – Thunderstorms will roll across south central Nebraska today, but the bigger concern may arrive late Sunday as snow reappears.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, isolated strong storms are possible Saturday afternoon and evening, especially along Highway 81 and near I-80. These could bring hail up to the size of quarters and wind gusts near 60 MPH. Motorists should remain alert through 2 a.m. Sunday as storm activity continues overnight.
By Sunday night, colder air will sweep in, bringing the potential for a wintry mix and slushy snow across portions of south central Nebraska. Areas along Highway 81—including Hastings, York, and Geneva—could see snow mixing with rain. Though accumulation is expected to remain low, even light snow can create slick travel conditions during late-night and early Monday commutes.
Temperatures will dip into the upper 20s Sunday night, with gusty winds making it feel colder. Spotty snow showers may linger into Monday morning before skies clear.
Looking ahead, the five-day forecast shows a calm Monday with highs near 51°F. Rain chances return Tuesday evening into Wednesday, with another storm system bringing gusty winds and more widespread precipitation. Thursday and Friday offer a brief return to mild, mostly sunny conditions with highs in the upper 50s and low 60s.
Drivers should watch for changing road conditions Sunday night and Tuesday evening. Spotters are encouraged to report hail or wind damage to the National Weather Service.
