Chicago, IL – Illinois residents should brace for a fast-moving weather system Sunday night that could bring measurable snowfall to the Chicago metro area by Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, strong thunderstorms are expected to roll through the region Sunday evening before transitioning to snow overnight. Precipitation is expected to begin as rain and thunderstorms late Sunday, with a 70% chance of storms developing after 4 p.m. But the real concern is the drop in temperature, turning rain into snow after midnight and continuing into early Monday.

Snow accumulation is not expected to be heavy, but even light snow during the morning commute could create slippery roads and poor visibility across major corridors, including I-55, I-90, and Lake Shore Drive. Wind gusts up to 30 mph could further reduce visibility and create icy patches. Monday morning drivers should plan for extra travel time and monitor local conditions.

Sunday will see a high of 71°F with breezy south winds. By midnight, temps drop to the mid-30s as snow develops. Monday’s high will reach only 41°F, with snow tapering by late morning.

5-Day Extended Forecast for Chicago:

  • Monday: Snow showers early, then mostly cloudy. High near 41°F.
  • Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high near 46°F.
  • Wednesday: Rain showers likely. High around 47°F.
  • Thursday: Partly sunny, high near 59°F.
  • Friday: Mostly sunny and cooler. High near 54°F.
