Hastings, NE – A dense fog advisory is currently in effect across central and southern Nebraska, lasting until noon on Christmas Day. Travelers are urged to exercise caution as visibility could drop to less than a quarter mile in some areas. Freezing temperatures may cause slick roads, particularly on untreated or elevated surfaces.
According to the National Weather Service, the advisory spans portions of north-central Kansas and much of Nebraska, including Kearney, Red Cloud, and Grand Island. Freezing fog began overnight and is expected to persist into the late morning, potentially complicating post-Christmas travel plans. Drivers should use headlights, reduce speeds, and maintain safe distances between vehicles.
The weather forecast for the region remains cloudy today, with a high near 39°F and light southeast winds. Widespread dense fog is predicted to develop again Wednesday night into Thursday, with low temperatures around 32°F. As freezing fog could reoccur, road conditions may worsen into the post-holiday weekend.
Looking ahead, Thursday will bring a slight chance of rain and a high near 44°F. Conditions improve slightly by Friday, with highs near 49°F and partly cloudy skies. By Saturday, sunshine returns with highs reaching 52°F.
Drivers are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and prepare for sudden visibility changes and icy patches throughout the holiday week.
