Falls City, Nebraska – Drivers across southeast Nebraska could face sudden whiteout conditions Sunday as wind gusts up to 65 mph whip falling snow, briefly dropping visibility below a quarter mile and creating dangerous travel on rural highways.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 9 p.m. Sunday for Johnson, Nemaha, Pawnee, and Richardson counties. Snow totals are expected to reach up to 2 inches, but the extreme winds will blow snow across roadways, creating near-blizzard conditions at times.
Communities including Falls City, Auburn, Pawnee City, Tecumseh, Sterling, and Table Rock may experience the worst travel conditions during the afternoon and early evening. Open stretches of highways such as U.S. 75 and U.S. 136 are particularly vulnerable to drifting snow and sudden crosswinds.
The powerful wind also raises the risk for tree damage and scattered power outages, especially in rural areas where gusts may exceed 65 mph. Loose outdoor items could be blown around, and tree limbs weakened by winter weather may snap.
Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra stopping distance, especially on bridges and exposed roadways. Nebraska travelers can check updated conditions by calling 511 before heading out.
Snow and blowing snow should gradually ease later Sunday evening, but hazardous travel may persist until the advisory expires at 9 p.m., and additional alerts remain possible if winds stay strong.
