Omaha, Nebraska – Residents across eastern Nebraska could face rapidly changing weather conditions late Sunday afternoon as thunderstorms develop with the potential for large hail, damaging wind gusts and an isolated tornado before midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, storm chances range from 25% to 40% across the region Sunday afternoon and evening, with the highest coverage expected in northeast Nebraska. Forecasters say there is a 5% chance that some storms could become severe, especially between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The primary threats include hail up to 2 inches in diameter and wind gusts approaching 58 mph. Areas near Norfolk, Fremont, Columbus and West Point face the greatest severe weather concern, though storms could also impact Omaha, Lincoln and nearby portions of Interstate 80 later this evening. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out if stronger storms organize quickly.

Drivers are urged to monitor weather alerts closely before traveling Sunday evening, especially during outdoor Memorial Day weekend activities. Loose outdoor furniture, tents and decorations should be secured ahead of stronger wind gusts. Residents are also encouraged to keep mobile devices charged in case warnings are issued after sunset.

While not every community will see thunderstorms, any storm that develops could intensify rapidly for a short period. Conditions are expected to calm overnight, though additional thunderstorm chances may return to the Plains early next week.
