Omaha, NE – Icy roads and lingering snowfall are creating hazardous travel conditions across parts of Nebraska and Iowa as New Year’s Day approaches. Authorities have warned drivers to exercise caution as several roadways, including those near Omaha and Wilber, remain partially covered by snow and ice.
According to the National Weather Service, rain transitioning to snow overnight is causing reduced visibility and slick spots on key highways. These conditions are expected to persist through early Wednesday morning, with temperatures dipping below freezing. Roadways marked as “partially covered” include major stretches near Omaha, as identified by the Nebraska Department of Transportation.
Residents are urged to delay non-essential travel, particularly after sunset, when icy patches are more likely to form. Winds of up to 25 mph are expected to further reduce visibility. Overnight lows will hover around 33°F, with snowfall accumulations under half an inch predicted.
Looking ahead, Wednesday will bring sunny skies with a high of 32°F, but frigid northwest winds will keep the wind chill factor low. Another snow system is anticipated late Thursday, with a 50% chance of precipitation. Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing through the weekend.
Travelers are advised to monitor live road conditions and forecasts before venturing out. For updates, visit the National Weather Service or Nebraska Department of Transportation websites.
