Hastings, Nebraska – A dangerous round of storms is set to barrel across Nebraska, Kansas, and Missouri late Monday evening, bringing damaging winds, large hail, and intense heat to the region through early Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill and Hastings, severe storms will push east from central Nebraska and north-central Kansas starting around 9 p.m., reaching northwest Missouri—including Kansas City and St. Joseph—by midnight. A Level 2 (Slight Risk) alert is in place, with 60+ mph gusts and quarter-size hail possible through 3 a.m. Tuesday. Locally heavy rainfall may also cause ponding on roads and brief visibility loss.
Omaha, Lincoln, Manhattan, and Chillicothe are all within the impact zone. Communities along I-29 and I-70 should prepare for overnight power outages, fallen limbs, and slick road conditions. The strongest storms are expected in eastern Nebraska and northern Kansas before spreading into western and central Missouri.
On Tuesday, the danger shifts to heat. Heat index values could spike past 105°F in parts of Missouri and eastern Kansas, especially along US-50 and near Topeka. Scattered storms may return by afternoon, keeping forecasts volatile.
Residents in the tri-state region are urged to stay weather-aware, avoid non-essential travel during storm hours, and hydrate during Tuesday’s heat wave. Additional warnings may be issued if storms intensify overnight.
