Nebraska – Warm wind sweeps across dry fields this morning, and that combination is already raising fire danger concerns across the Omaha metro and into western Iowa.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, very high to extreme fire danger is expected through this evening, with a Red Flag Warning in effect from noon to 8 p.m. for parts of northeast Nebraska. Dry air, gusts near 30 mph, and cured grasses mean any spark could spread quickly. Avoid outdoor burning and secure anything that could ignite.
Temperatures climb fast today, reaching 83°F under increasing sunshine. That warmth is short-lived. Changes begin quickly by Thursday as a strong system pushes in from the west.
Storm chances ramp up early Thursday, with rain and thunderstorms becoming likely by mid-morning and continuing into the afternoon. Rain chances hit 90%, and some storms could turn strong. Meteorologists are watching for gusty winds, brief heavy rain, and a low-end tornado risk across southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa.
Travel impacts will build along I-80, I-680, and Highway 75 as visibility drops and roads turn slick. Plan extra time Thursday afternoon and keep devices charged in case of isolated outages.
Conditions settle briefly Friday with sunshine and a cooler high near 67°F. That break won’t last. Showers and storms return Saturday and Sunday, with additional rainfall and occasional thunder possible, especially late Saturday night into Sunday afternoon.
Temperature swings remain notable, dropping from the low 80s today into the 60s this weekend. While no freeze is expected, rapid cooling can still create slick spots if rain lingers into cooler nights.
