Nebraska – The morning sun is already turning sidewalks and pavement into heat traps across the Omaha metro, and the most dangerous conditions are still building. By this afternoon, the combination of triple-digit temperatures and oppressive humidity will create life-threatening heat for anyone spending extended time outdoors.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. CDT today for eastern Nebraska and western Iowa, including Omaha, Bellevue, Papillion, Council Bluffs, Fremont, Glenwood and surrounding communities. Forecasters expect heat index values as high as 119 degrees, creating an extreme risk for heat-related illnesses during the afternoon and early evening. Officials note that Tuesday will remain hot, although peak heat index values should ease slightly into the 105 to 115 degree range.
Omaha is forecast to reach 102 degrees under sunny skies today, with heat index values around 111 degrees during the afternoon. Light winds will do little to provide relief. Drivers along Interstates 80, 29, 480 and 680 should prepare for intense heat affecting vehicles and roadside conditions. Anyone traveling should carry extra water and avoid leaving children or pets inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
The dangerous heat remains part of a sprawling heat dome covering much of the central United States. While today stays dry, slight improvement arrives Tuesday with highs in the lower 90s. By Wednesday, temperatures rebound into the lower 90s before scattered thunderstorms become possible on Thursday, offering another opportunity for localized cooling.
Stay hydrated throughout the day, wear lightweight clothing, postpone strenuous outdoor work until early morning or evening, and check frequently on older adults, neighbors and anyone without reliable air conditioning. Employers should consider additional cooling breaks for outdoor workers during peak heating.
Long-range outlooks continue to indicate above-normal temperatures through the 6-to-10-day period, suggesting the summer heat pattern is far from over across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.
