Omaha, NE – Eastern Nebraska and western Iowa will face dangerously cold temperatures from late Monday night through Thursday morning, with wind chills dropping as low as 32 degrees below zero. The extreme cold is expected to impact cities including Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk, Fremont, and Council Bluffs.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, the extreme cold watch will take effect at 12 a.m. Tuesday and remain until 12 p.m. Thursday. Wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 10 to 30 minutes.
Portions of east-central and southeast Nebraska, along with southwest Iowa, will experience the harshest conditions. Residents are advised to dress in layers, including hats, gloves, and face coverings, and limit time outdoors.
Travel may be hazardous, and officials urge caution when commuting. Historically, such temperatures strain heating systems and increase the risk of hypothermia. Prepare by ensuring homes are well-heated, checking on vulnerable neighbors, and avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure.
This cold snap follows a weather advisory in place until 9 a.m. Sunday, where wind chills reached 23 below zero in parts of northeast Nebraska.
