Omaha, NE – A flood watch has been issued for eastern and central Nebraska as ice jams pose a significant flooding risk along the Platte, Elkhorn, and Loup rivers. The National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley issued the alert Thursday morning, warning that sudden rises in water levels could occur through Saturday evening.

According to the National Weather Service, the flood watch includes the counties of Antelope, Pierce, Madison, Stanton, Cuming, Platte, Colfax, Dodge, Washington, Butler, Saunders, Douglas, Sarpy, and Cass. Residents in low-lying areas or near riverbanks should remain vigilant, as ice jams can cause water levels to fluctuate by one to three feet in a short period.

Officials report that ice breakup has already begun in the Loup River, with minor flooding observed near Columbus. This activity suggests imminent ice movement in the Platte River, raising concerns for communities along its path, including Omaha, Fremont, and Plattsmouth.

Authorities advise residents to monitor weather updates and prepare for potential evacuations. Those in flood-prone areas should have an emergency plan and be ready to act quickly if conditions worsen.
