Lexington, Neb. – Low-lying roads and poor drainage areas across south central Nebraska remain flooded Tuesday morning after up to 3 inches of overnight rain swamped Buffalo and Dawson counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Flood Advisory remains in effect until noon CDT, with ongoing issues in towns including Lexington, Cozad, and Elm Creek. Though the heaviest rainfall has moved on, an additional half inch of rain could fall early Tuesday, prolonging localized flooding near streams such as Buffalo Creek, Plum Creek, and Turkey Creek.

Further north, a separate Flood Advisory remains active until 4:30 a.m. CDT for parts of Sherman, Gosper, and Phelps counties. Hazard, Ravenna, and Elwood were among the hardest hit, with storm totals nearing 3 inches in some locations. The advisory no longer includes Kearney, but nearby rural roads remain slick and potentially impassable.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways, especially before sunrise when standing water is harder to see. “Turn around, don’t drown,” remains the official guidance for navigating high water.

Flood concerns may ease by midday, but forecasters warn more advisories are possible if additional rainfall develops.
