Hastings, NE – An Arctic blast will settle into south-central Nebraska tonight, bringing wind chills as low as 25 degrees below zero. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from midnight Saturday through noon Tuesday, warning residents to prepare for life-threatening conditions if exposed for even short periods.

According to the National Weather Service, actual temperatures will plummet near zero, with dangerous wind chills lasting through Tuesday morning. The coldest periods will occur overnight Sunday into Monday, when wind chills are forecast to reach their lowest levels. Daytime temperatures Monday are expected to remain below zero.

Residents are urged to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure and dress in multiple warm layers if venturing outside. Pets and livestock should be provided with adequate shelter, food, and water to ensure their safety.

Key areas affected include Grand Island, Hastings, and Kearney. Snow accumulation is not expected, but blustery winds will contribute to the extreme cold.

Looking ahead, temperatures are forecast to improve slightly by Tuesday afternoon, reaching highs in the upper 20s. Wednesday offers a welcome break, with highs near 40 degrees.

Drivers on I-80 and Highway 6 should exercise caution due to reduced visibility and the potential for frostbite if stranded. The National Weather Service advises preparing an emergency kit for vehicles, including blankets, water, and flashlights.

Stay tuned for updates, and monitor local weather conditions closely to stay safe during this prolonged cold snap.
